Pharr, Texas is a city located inside Hidalgo County. It is also a few miles from the border leading to Mexico. In addition, it is also a part of the McAllen Mission metro area. Situated between Almo and McAllen, Route 281 intersects the city and leads straight towards a Mexican city named Reynosa, Tamaulipas. According to the United States Census, Pharr had a population of 70,400 in 2010, with the population jumping to 79,707 in 2018. That number is expected to be higher in 2020. In addition, the 79,000 and more population are all situated in a city that is measured to have 23 square miles of land. It’s neighboring cities like McAllen, Mission, and Edinburg all run along near the southern border, including Pharr which connects directly to it. Pharr is often described as having very similar humid and tropical temperatures that mimic parts of Florida, but with less rain and higher temperatures during the summer. It is home to Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle, and many other notable locations.
The city was originally named after Henry Pharr, a Louisiana sugar planter that moved to the area. Henry Pharr also founded the Louisiana and Rio Grande Valley Canal Company and created a sugar plantation. After the early 1900s, the city began to grow in population and started establishing buildings, general stores, hotels, banks, a post office, and other businesses. This would lead to Pharr’s expansive growth and creation of an overarching irrigation system that would supply water to various farms in the area. Residing close to the Rio Grande Valley, many visitors usually pass through Pharr before going to other areas in Texas and still a major part of Texas and its history.
