Bordered with the Rio Grande Valley, Mission is known as the “Home of the Ruby Red Grapefruit,” because of that fruit other citrus fruits grown in the area. It even hosts an annual Texas Citrus Fiesta festival for the community. To this day, the city of Mission is still expanding along with its neighboring cities, largely because of its produce and agricultural industry. One of the most notable locations is La Lomita. Known as “little hill,” the site was given the name because of its historical significance and uneven terrain in otherwise flat land. The small hill is located adjacent to the historical site of a former mission and ranch headquarters near Farm Road 1016, southwest of Hidalgo County. It’s also become a popular location for butterfly and bird watchers alike, avid golfers, and passionate citrus fruit lovers.
