The city was originally founded by settlers who migrated to the area in 1912. The small population grew exponentially after the development of its ports and expansion of commercial properties in Freeport. Its major economic expansion was directly tied to the opening of the Dow Chemical Company. Its refineries and chemical plants provided employment to many residents in the city which led to a boom in population growth. Along with the development of schools, commercial properties, banks, and homes, Freeport became a place to raise a family and achieve a stable life. In 1957, the city merged with Velasco which immediately saw a population increase. In 2003, the city annexed Bryan Beach, which is semi-close to Quintana. Bryan Lake. Bryan Beach and many other parks and attractions draw in crowds from all over Texas every year.
