If we told you that Channelview wasnβt a real place, you would, however, defer us to a map and easily show us a Texas handbook that clearly displays its name. However, Channelview is technically not a real city, sort of. Channelview is what is considered a Census-Designated Place (CDP). A Census-Designated Place is a term allocated by the United States Census for statistical reasons. In other words, the term is labeled to communities, villages, or towns that share characteristics of cities but are technically not formally incorporated. Generally, they lack any type of municipal government as well and are generally self-regulated. Thatβs what Channelview is, a metro area with oil refineries. Channelview is still located in Harris County and is part of the Houston Baytown metro area. It is home to oil refineries but has homes, commercial buildings, and parks such as Moncrief Park. According to the United States Census, the population was about 38,289 in 2010 and had grown to 43,751 by mid-2019.
Channelview is situated near Old River and San Jacinto River by Interstate 10 and a few miles off Downtown Houston. Its name was given because of its location. The curve of the northeastern ship channel inspired the name Channelview. Channelview was once home to Lorenzo de Zavala, a founding member of the State of Texas. Throughout its years the major refinery led to population growth of job seekers looking to work in the refinery after oil discoveries in the early part of the 1900s. Over the years, a community began to grow and with it came the development of local businesses, commercial properties, and residential properties. In 1967, a petrochemical plant was opened and with it came more population growth with the rise of job opportunities. The population gradually started to grow.
