Eagan, Minnesota, is a town in northern Dakota County. The city is on the southern bank of the Minnesota River and is across from the Mall of America in Bloomington and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The city has a population of about 65,000.
Interstate 35E travels through the middle part of the city. The highway goes north to Saint Paul. Interstate 494 makes up the city’s northern boundary and goes west to the airport and Bloomington.
Fort Snelling State Park and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge are on the northwestern end of Eagan. The two park areas are on the shores of the Minnesota River. The confluence between the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers is to the north, while the Minnesota Zoo is south.
Independent School Districts 191, 196, and 197 all operate out of Eagan. There are five high schools and five middle schools in the city, with each of these belonging to one the school districts.
Eagan, Minnesota, was formed in 1860 and would be incorporated in Dakota County in 1972. The city was settled as an Irish onion-farming community. The city grew following the construction of Interstate 35E and the expansion of Highway 77 into the area. The city name comes from Patrick Eagan, an Irish native who arrived in the area with his wife in the 1850s and settled here.
