The downtown part of Burnsville is home to its Heart of the City development. The area features more than 50 acres of land supported by smart growth, a process that entails the production of walkable streets and mixed-use developments. The Ames Performing Arts Center is in the region.
There are about 1,800 acres of park space in Burnsville. The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is on the northern end of the city along the Minnesota River. Alimagnet Park and Lac Lavon Park are both on the southeastern end of the city. Crystal Lake is to the south, while Blackdog Lake is to the north near the river.
Burnsville, Minnesota, is on land that was ceded by the Dakota tribe in 1851. The region was settled by Norwegian, Irish, and Scottish settlers. Irish settler Willian Byrne donated much of his land for a church and school that would make up the city’s center as it was formed in 1855. The Burnsville name comes from the recording of Byrne’s name, as the “Burns” misspelling was never corrected. Burnsville was incorporated as a city in 1964 following the defeat of an attempt by Bloomington to annex the area.
Both the eastern and western parts of Interstate 35 serve Burnsville. I-35W goes to Bloomington and Minneapolis, while I-35E goes to Saint Paul.
The Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District operates public schools around the city. The district also covers portions of the cities of Savage and Eagan.
