Bloomington, Minnesota, is a city about ten miles south of Minneapolis. The city is on the northern bank of the Minnesota River. Bloomington has a population of 85,000, thus making the city the fifth-largest in the state.

The Mall of America is the most noteworthy site in Bloomington. The complex is the largest shopping mall in the United States based on floor area. The Mall of America features about 7.9 million square feet of space. There are more than 550 stores located throughout the mall.

Bloomington, Minnesota, was settled in the mid-nineteenth century by European settlers. Gideon Hollister Pond established his cabin in the area in 1856. Metropolitan Stadium was constructed in 1956 and was home to the Minnesota Twins baseball team and Minnesota Vikings football team. The stadium was demolished in 1985. The Mall of America opened on the site of Metropolitan Stadium in 1992. Bloomington takes its name from the city in Illinois that many of the original settlers in the area came from.

The John F. Kennedy and Thomas Jefferson High Schools are the largest public schools in Bloomington. Kennedy High School serves the eastern end of Bloomington, while Jefferson High School is in the west.

The Mall of America Transit Station is in Bloomington. The station is in the lower level of the eastern parking deck at the mall. The Metro’s Blue and Red Lines are both served by the station. The Blue Line rail train goes north towards downtown Minneapolis. The Red Line bus travels south to Apple Valley.

The NWA History Museum is in Bloomington. The museum showcases the history of Northwest Airlines, the Twin Cities-based airline that merged with Delta in 2010.
