The greater Burien area had held many votes for the region to become a city but failed to do so during the 1980s and early 1990s. The situation was referred to as the “Third Runway” which would have expanded the Seattle Tacoma International Airport. Eventually, the residents voted to incorporate and officially recognize Burien as a city in 1993. Over time, the city of Burien saw its population increase and its economy diversify.
According to the United States Census, the city of Burien was shown to have reached a recorded population number of roughly 33,313 by the end of 2010. Its population size was also shown to have increased substantially over the following years. By the end of 2019, the city was estimated to have reached an estimated population number of about 51,500. The city is home to many parks, venues, shops, restaurants, and other attractions that attract visitors and residents. It is home to places such as Three Tree Point, Seahurst Park, Dottie Harper Park, Town Square, Old Burien Library, Burien Transit Center, and many other places that draw people from all over.
