West Jordan, Utah, is a city in the central part of Salt Lake County. The city has a population of about 115,000 and is the fourth-largest in the state.
West Jordan is about eighteen miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The Veterans Memorial Highway or I-15 to the east connects the two cities.
The Jordan River forms the eastern end of West Jordan, and it also provides the city with its name. The Oquirrh Mountains are to the west, with the Freeman and Nelson Peaks being the tallest spaces nearby.
The Red Line on the TRAX light rail system goes through West Jordan. The southern terminus on the route is in the nearby Daybreak community. The route goes north into downtown Salt Lake City and ends at the University of Utah campus.
West Jordan, Utah, was settled by Mormons in 1848. The settlers named the river nearby the Jordan River in honor of a river of the same name in Israel. The river’s name comes from how it flows from the freshwater of the Utah Lake to the inland saltwater of the Great Salt Lake, just like how the Israeli river goes from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. The city great as an agricultural hub, with many sawmills opening in the 1850s. Many of the mills and houses owned by Archibald Gardner have been renovated as part of the Gardner Village area.
