With an elevation of 469 feet, the population was recorded at 32,684 in the 2010 census, which was up from 27,885 from the 2000 census. As big as it is, it is an unincorporated suburban town, which is directly north of Bakersfield, just across the Kern River, slightly east of the Highway 99 and west of the Kern River Oil Field.
Oilsdale was previously called by two names Waits and North Side. The city was founded in 1909 by Samuel Dickinson who subdivided his land. The very first post office opened in Oildale in 1916. Almost all of the original U-2 spy planes which had flown out of Groom Lake were built in Oildale at a secret factory which was disguised as a tire factory, which is located just west of Meadows Field Airport on Norris Rd.

Oildale is also adjacent is the large Kern Front Oil Field, just north of town, and the much smaller Fruitvale Oil Field, to the south and west.
