Monterey Park CA is located directly east of Los Angeles. The city is part of the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County. Monterey Park is about seven miles out of downtown Los Angeles, thus making it one of the closest suburbs to the city.

Four school districts serve students in the city, including the Alhambra and Garvey School Districts. The East Los Angeles Community College is situated in the town as well. California State University at Los Angeles is outside the northwestern end of the city.

Monterey Park is directly south of Pasadena and north of Montebello. The Pomona Freeway or Route 60 brings people on the south end to downtown Los Angeles. On the north, people can reach Los Angeles through the San Bernardino Freeway or I-10. The northern end of the Long Beach Freeway or I-710 is on the western end of the city.

Monterey Park is on land that was owned by Alessandro Repetto, an Italian settler who bought five thousand acres of land after the Civil War. American Army mail rider Richard Garvey settled in the area and established properties around Repetto’s land. A large dam would soon be built to bring water to the area. The city of Monterey Park grew and would be incorporated in 1916. The Asian population would grow not long after that with more people settling in the region.
