Monterey Park is on land that was owned by Alessandro Repetto, an Italian settler who bought five thousand acres of land after the Civil War. American Army mail rider Richard Garvey settled in the area and established properties around Repetto’s land. A large dam would soon be built to bring water to the area. The city of Monterey Park grew and would be incorporated in 1916. The Asian population would grow not long after that with more people settling in the region.
