Carson City is the capital of Nevada. The city is on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. The city is about 30 miles south of Reno and 45 miles southeast of Truckee, California.
The Nevada State Museum is in a building that once housed the Carson City Mint. The museum features the world’s largest remains of the Columbian mammoth on display. A recreation of a Wild West village is also at the museum.
Interstate 580 links to the city of Reno to the north. The road runs alongside US Route 395.
US Route 50 also goes through Carson City. The route goes to the west along southern Lake Tahoe and eventually leads to Sacramento. The road also goes east to Fallon and Ely. The Nevada portion of Route 50 is considered to be the loneliest road in the country, as there are very few signs of civilization along the road at this point.
The Carson City School District runs ten schools in the city. Carson High School is the largest of the schools.
Carson City is home to multiple casinos. Among the casinos here include Casino Fandango, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Nugget, Bodines, Lucky Strike, and SlotWorld casinos.
Carson City, Nevada, is on land that was once settled by the Washoe tribe. John C. Fremont first settled the land in the 1840s. The city would be named after Kit Carson, the scout that Fremont hired for his travels to the area. The city grew thanks to the discovery of precious metals at the Comstock Lode. Carson City would be formed in 1858 and would be declared the capital of Nevada in 1864. The city grew in the 1960s by absorbing many other former town areas in the region, including Empire City.
Carson City is an independent city and is therefore not a part of any county in the state. The city has a population of about 55,000, thus making it the sixth-largest city in Nevada.
There are many mountains located to the west of Carson City near Lake Tahoe. Genoa Peak, Monument Peak, and Mount Houghton are among the tallest peaks in the area.
Carson City is also within driving distance of multiple ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe. Some of the top resorts in the area include the Diamond Peak, Monument Peak, Slide Mountain, and East Peak resorts.
